About:
Growing up in the coastal areas of NC and the Outer Banks, I have grown to love and respect the outdoors. The rhythm of nature and the waters of the region both have helped shape who I am as a person and a musician.
I was brought up to love music; my dad plays guitar and my mom sings. They both had their favorite musicians and music so I was able to take in a lot as a youngster. Dad liked Grand Funk and George Strait while mom liked Billy Joel, Janet Jackson, and anything Motown.
On my 16th Birthday, I was given a purple Chevy Blazer and an acoustic guitar. The SUV got a lot of use while my guitar sat in a corner collecting dust. It wasn't until my first girlfriend broke up with me that I sat down and picked up the guitar. The guitar proved to be a creative outlet that eased my heartbreak.
Fast-forward a year down the road; I was working at my uncle's computer shop when a customer, Angel, walked in. She came into the back of the store and noticed my guitar that I kept at work for down time. She picked it up and taught me a couple easy* songs. I was excited to learn the new songs and when she returned a few days later, I played them for her. With my determination to learn more and her passion for music, we became great friends and started a band together - 'Avatara'.
When I was college, I met one of the best friends I could ever ask for - Ashley. We jammed out a lot that year and I even took her to her first open mic. Throughout our years of friendship, we've played many gigs together. Several years ago we decided to designate ourselves as an acoustic duo and call ourselves "R&R" (because our last names are Robinson & Russell). Although we no longer live in the same area, to this day, we still get together and play gigs on the OBX and in Raleigh. We value the harmony we create as friends and musicians.
Over the years, music has morphed into much more than just a hobby for me. I started out playing for fun at open mic nights, moved onto playing occasional gigs with a band, and eventually was able to start playing part-time as a paid solo musician. I eventually left my full-time job as a boat captain and decided to take the leap and try to become a full-time musician. Years later I am proud to say that I have made this my career and I am now busy playing year-round for weddings, private events, and the occasional bar/restaurant gig. I feel very lucky to be able to do what I love every day and support my family while doing it. I am now a proud father and husband and my family is my number one motivation in life and business! I would not be here without their support!
It's been about 16 years since I picked up that guitar and I'm so glad that I did. I've made new friends, entertained for crowds all over the place, and I'm really happy and excited every time I play. I enjoy playing all different types of music - music for every generation. I strive to seek out new music and extend my love for music beyond the boundaries of the isolated islands that I call home. I am looking forward to many more years of playing music!
